Heading out in nature? Always carry the 10 Essentials!

The 10 Essentials are a collection of first aid and emergency items that can assist you in the event of unexpected injuries, delays, or disasters. They should be a part of any survival kit or gear. The 10 essentials just covers the very basics, depending on your needs you may need to go even beyond.

SHELTER ( Tent / Bivy / Tarp )

Shelter is one of the most important elements during any survival situation.  It can protect you from severe weather conditions and exposure to the elements. 

NUTRITION ( Food )

You should always be prepared with a sufficient supply of food.

HYDRATION ( Water / Water Filtration )

Pack enough water for at least 1 gallon a day per person. If in the outdoors you will need to find a way to collect and purify water.

NAVIGATION ( Map / Compass / GPS )

Navigational tools to plan your route or find your path and reorient yourself if ever lost. One should know how to read a topographical or relief map and use a compass.

SUN PROTECTION ( Glasses / Hat / Sunscreen )

Sun protection is necessary to protect your skin and eyes against harsh UV rays. Sunglasses, hats and long sleeve clothing can help to protect the skin.

INSULATION ( Jacket / Gloves / Hat / Thermals)

Nature is very unpredictable. Be prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions. Pack an extra layer of clothing that reflects the most extreme conditions you could encounter.

ILLUMINATION ( Flashlight / Headlamp / Lantern)

Lighting is indispensable in the outdoors, always carry a source of illumination and extra batteries.

FIRST AID (First Aid Kit)

Be prepared for emergencies by packing first-aid supplies with you. Start with a pre-made kit and modify and add to it in order to fit your trip and your medical needs. 

FIRE ( Matches / Flint Steel / Lighters )

Fire can be the difference between life and death in a survival situation. Always carry several methods of making fire (waterproof matches, fire starters, lighters etc)

REPAIR KIT AND TOOLS

A basic repair kit and tools to make repairs, things like a knife, multi-tool, duct tape, paracord rope.
